Most live service games have a paid Battle Pass for players to progress through by leveling up or spending a currency, with each tier of the pass giving you a reward when reached. Helldivers 2 has a paid Battle Pass, too, though it works differently than most.
Instead of putting a group of players onto a dedicated server, the matchmaker simply connects you to another player's public lobby as they're preparing for a mission that matches your chosen planet and difficulty.
By far the biggest way Helldivers 2 switches things up from the original is by moving to the third-person perspective, and so far I’m pleasantly surprised how well that transition works. I was initially skeptical about the change given how much the bird’s Helldivers 2 Gameplay eye view was part of the original’s DNA, but it only took a matter of seconds for my concerns to disappear. Getting closer to the action feels great and allows for some really hilarious moments, like when I accidentally called in an airstrike that took out the rest of my team or when I found myself surrounded by absolutely terrifying robots and used my jetpack to leap to safety.
While Helldivers 2 strongly encourages playing with friends and even comes with a built-in code-based friends list, it also has a quickplay matchmaking option that helps random players quickly squad up.

It is a bit on the difficult side if you’re not playing with at least a friend, but I highly recommend a full group of 4 for the best experience. There are a good few types of missions, and some of them are very challenging as a solo player. If you don’t mind a good challenge, however, or have friends you can party up with, Helldivers 2 is a fantastic time and I sincerely believe you will enjoy yourself.
